Lucas teen saves family from fire that destroys home
03:59 PM CDT on Wednesday, May 7, 2008 By KIMBERLY DURNAN / The Dallas Morning News
A 13-year-old Collin County girl, who stayed up to finish homework, heard the smoke detector and woke her parents and four siblings to escape a fire that destroyed their home.
The fire began around 1 a.m. Wednesday in the garage of the 4,700-square-foot home on Brookhaven Drive, said Ed Fleming, assistant chief of the Lucas Volunteer Fire Department.
The fire started from faulty wiring in a Ford vehicle that was parked in the family's garage, Assistant Chief Fleming said. The family had received notice that the vehicle had been recalled due to fires starting in unattended vehicles.
The family's father tried to douse the vehicle fire with a water hose and suffered third-degree burns on his arm.
Firefighters said they had a difficult time putting the fire out because the hydrants were small and provided low pressure.
"We just couldn't get enough water to fight the fire," Assistant Chief Fleming said.

Dear Lovejoy High School and Sloan Creek Middle School Family,
One of our LHS families experienced a terrible loss Tuesday night. The home of sophomore Korrin and seventh grade Ashley Welch was completely destroyed by fire. Fortunately, her family of seven escaped without harm. Korrin’s and Ashley’s parents are Dan and Kim Ford and their siblings are Payton (10), Isaiah (4) and Noah (2). Even the dogs are safe and sound.
They have been left without vehicles, identification, no communication, no clothing, and no place to live. The family has relatives in the area so they plan to stay with them until they are able to decide their next step.
The Lovejoy High School store has contributed some shirts to the family and the Hart Elementary school and parents have sent some items for the family.
Several of you have expressed a desire to help in some way. However, because the family will be staying with relatives for the time being, they will have little room to store gifts and it is almost too hectic to try to sort through clothing or household items.
Since they have lost everything, gift cards to clothing stores, Target, Walmart, or grocery stores can help with immediate needs.
If you choose to give money, please know that cash will be the quickest way to get it where it needs to go (no checks, please).
Lovejoy High School / Middle School will receive any of the above items you may wish to give at the reception desk at the main entrance for the next week or so.
Thank you for your concern for this family, we know they will be appreciative of a kind word or anything you might share.
Sincerely,
Mike Goddard Gavan Goodrich Lovejoy High School Sloan Creek Middle School
Note: The School District Recommends either Cash Gifts or Gift
Certificates to Major Retailers Like Target, Walmart, etc. that
can easily be used for clothing and food, as the Ford family is a
large family of 7, and includes 5 school age children.
